In 2020, sculptor and furniture designer Charles Schreiber thought about making things that were compact, easy to transport, and mobile.

He shared, “Nobody knows what’s going to happen. Things feel so insecure now for so many people that being able to pull up stakes quickly and move seems to be something to consider.”

Upon his son’s request, Schreiber made a flat-packed bed for his son, to be installed in his home in Lewiston, Maine. Schreiber designed a king-sized bed, on view here, that could be transported easily and assembled using no tools or hardware. It also provided a stable and sturdy platform to support a comfortable night’s sleep.

“Not only is the Charles Schreiber bed an engineering feat that breaks down into flat, transportable parts that reflect the peripatetic nature of young adulthood, it is also a work of love. Commissioned by a son, as a way to honor his father’s art, the father has made a design object that continues to nurture his child in what is a lonely year.”
