Artist Statement

My practice is rooted within the process of painting and drawing, and influenced by the formal qualities found from my surroundings. I am drawn to pattern, shape, and color that I collect through observation, typically from architectural moments, and then lead with material and texture, mainly with oil paint and colored pencil. More recently, my work is composed by layering color, building forms through collaging geometric shapes, and constructing imagined shadows and lighting. By using a limited palette, I look forward to using a range of hues within the same color family to create an invitation to look more closely and slowly. Overall, I view making painting as a back and forth between organizing a steadiness and then creating a disruption.
