Free, registration encouraged

Max Beckmann (Germany, 1884-1950), Madhouse (Irrenhaus) from the portfolio Faces (Gesichter), 1918 (published 1919), drypoint etching on paper, 9 7/8 x 11 1/2 inches. Gift of David and Eva Bradford, 2009.31.4

"We all wear masks -- at work, with friends and even with family. Some of these are functional but others limit the depth of our relationships.”

The PMA is excited to welcome David Bradford in conversation with Shalini Le Gall (Chief Curator, Susan Donnell and Harry W. Konkel Curator of European Art) for a special program exploring the nature of German Expressionist graphics featured in the exhibition now on view, The Draftsman in Society: German Expressionist Prints. One of the attractions of this subject for David is the question of "what is the artist presenting -- and concealing -- in these portraits? And what is the message to us as we struggle with the issue of how we want to be known?"

David and Eva Bradford have a summer cabin near Lovell, Maine, and winter in Berkeley, California. David is trained as a Social Psychologist and taught at Stanford University. Eva, trained as a therapist, worked for the City of Berkeley.

They acquired their first artwork on their honeymoon fifty-eight years ago. Over the years, they have built a significant collection that they are donating to the Portland Museum of Art.
