Artist Kathy Butterly and exhibition curator Lisa Melandri will discuss Out of one, Many/Headscapes, an exhibition featuring two bodies of work—wildly diverse forms all created from a pint glass, and recent, larger sculptures musing on varied themes from emotional states to current events. They will also delve into Butterly's current sculptural work and her signature, laborious process.
Kathy Butterly is a contemporary artist who splits her time between NYC and Maine. For the past thirty plus years her sculptures have focused on using the vessel form as her muse. Ceramic materials allow her to speak equally about color and form. She received her MFA from UC Davis, CA in 1990 and her BFA from Moore College of Art, Philadelphia in 1986. Kathy has been the recipient of numerous awards most notably 2014 Guggenheim Fellowship Award, 2011 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, 2009 Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant, 2002 Anonymous Was A Woman Grant. Her works are in the collections of numerous museums including The Whitney Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Brooklyn Museum, Carnegie Museum of At, Museum of Fine Arts Boston and the Portland Museum of Art, ME. Her work is represented by James Cohan, NYC.
Lisa Melandri, Executive Director, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, leads the region’s premier contemporary, non-collecting art institution. Since joining CAM in 2012, Lisa has brought both emerging and established artists from around the globe to St. Louis, presenting art that is always innovative, provocative, and relevant. During her tenure, Lisa has organized a wide array of exhibitions and curatorial projects that have delivered on her vision of expanding access to contemporary art. In 2013, Lisa inaugurated Street Views, a monumental video projection series on CAM's facade, featuring the work of pioneering digital media artist Jennifer Steinkamp. In 2015, she transformed CAM’s courtyard with Nomad Studio’s Green Varnish, a project that re-imagined the interior courtyard as a lush, growing sculpture and a new immersive space for museum visitors. In 2018, Lisa organized the first major solo exhibition for Amy Sherald, the acclaimed painter of Michelle Obama’s official portrait. As a curator, she has continued to organize such outstanding exhibitions as Mickalene Thomas: Mentors, Muses, and Celebrities; Salvatore Scarpitta: Racing Cars; Sanford Biggers; Christine Corday: RELATIVE POINTS; and Kathy Butterly: Out of one, many / Headscapes. Under her leadership, CAM has become one of St. Louis’s most welcoming and stimulating living rooms, where art is free for all. Prior to joining CAM, Lisa was Deputy Curator for Exhibitions and Programs at the Santa Monica Museum of Art. She holds degrees from Harvard University and the Williams College Graduate Program.
