Friends of the Collection with David Driskell

David Driskell’s iconic Ghetto Wall #2 was most recently a highlight of the Brooklyn Museum's landmark exhibition, Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power. Featuring works from one of the most politically, socially, and aesthetically revolutionary periods in American history, Ghetto Wall #2 helped communicate the spirit of aesthetic innovation that defined Black artistic practice from 1963 to 1983.

On August 22, you’re invited to hear from Driskell himself at the third annual Friends of the Collection Benefit. Established in 1983, the Friends of the Collection comprises individuals whose generosity directly supports the acquisition, conservation, and care for the collection as well as related programming. All ticket proceeds benefit the Friends of the Collection’s effort to acquire Driskell’s Ghetto Wall #2 for the PMA collection.

"David Driskell’s 1970 painting, Ghetto Wall #2, brings together a range of moments in time, and many art histories,” says Jessica May, Deputy Director and Robert and Elizabeth Nanovic Chief Curator. “It is both a profoundly modern work of art, representing a single flat painted panel (like so many abstract paintings in midcentury America), as well as a triumph of illusion."
