Dr. Virginia Mecklenburg, Chief Curator at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, has curated over 25 exhibitions at the Smithsonian, including African American Masters: Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights Era and Beyond, Telling Stories: Norman Rockwell from the Collections of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, Edward Hopper: The Watercolors and Metropolitan Lives: The Ashcan Artists and Their New York. Mecklenburg has published research on George Bellows, Richard Estes, William Glackens, Edward Hopper, Robert Indiana, Georgia O’Keeffe, and John Sloan.
